Manchester United’s newest American signings outdid any of their male Manchester United colleagues in terms of jersey sales, for the for the first three days after their signing. This was confirmed by a club spokesperson.
The sales of jerseys with the names of the United States stars Tobin Heath and Christen Press were so popular in the first three days of their release that they even outsold the likes of Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford.
Heath and Press signed for Manchester United in September from the Portland Thorns and Utah Royals respectively. United’s women’s team are just two years old after only being re-established in 2018. The signing of the two players has been seen as a massive coup for the English club.
Heath and Press are two-time World Cup winners with a combined 306 appearances for their country. They were both members of the 2015 and 2019 World Cup-winning squads.
They duo made their United debuts in the side's 3-0 win over Brighton with Heath providing an assist.
Los Angeles-born Press has opted to wear the number 24 shirt in homage to late basketball legend Kobe Bryant. Heath usually dons the number 17 but it was taken by Ona Batlle so she chose 77.
The stunning revelation by the club spokesperson demonstrates the the weight of Heath's and Press's move to the UK and the popularity they bring to the women's side of the club.
The pair aren’t the only American internationals to make the move into the Women's Super League. Their signing follows Sam Mewis and Rose Lavelle who both signed for crosstown rivals Manchester City in recent months. Another superstar, Alex Morgan, joined Tottenham Hotspur on a one-year contract in September.
The 2019-20 season was United's maiden year in the English top flight after they had won promotion from the Championship under the management of Casey Stoney.
