England's Lauren James, who was shown a red card during England's Round-of-16 match after stomping on Nigerian Michelle Alozie's back, has been handed a two game suspension by Fifa, meaning she may be available for the Women's World Cup final or third place playoff if England make it into the final four.

She will however miss England's match with Colombia on Saturday. The winner of that match will play either France or Australia in the semi-finals.

James was initially given a yellow card after stomping on Alozie's back in the 87th minute, but after was shown a red card after video review, and England played through extra time with ten players before winning 4-2 on penalties. The automatic one-match ban was extended to two per Fifa's policy for 'serious foul play.'

Alozie responded gracefully to the incident on social media, posting "We are playing on the world's stage. This game is one of passion, insurmountable emotions, and moments. All respect for Lauren James."

21-year-old James responded with an apology, saying "All my love and respect to you. I am sorry for what happened. Also for our England fans and my team-mates, playing with and for you is my greatest honour and I promise to learn from my experience."

James' absence will be a severe hindrance to the Lionesses. Out of England's seven non-penalty goals this World Cup, she has scored three.
