'Sport Is To Be Enjoyed' Sarah Hawkshaw Discusses Her Career In Hockey

Following on from a successful weekend at the EuroHockey Championship Qualifiers, where the Green Army won all three matches against Poland, The Czech Republic and Turkey, we had the opportunity to sit down with Sarah Hawkshaw to talk to us about her team's journey through the qualifiers and what lies ahead for her for the rest of the season.

'It was really great having it at home' she said referring to the qualifiers taking place in Ireland this year, and how having a home crowd made all the difference to their game throughout the matches.

Hawkshaw discusses the game style of the opposition and how her team adapted to  combat the teams, some of which they had never faced before. They perfected their short corners and strengthened their defense, enabling them to some away with three consecutive wins.

She discusses the World Cup and how Team Ireland were very much the underdogs in that competition. But having more expectation on their success for EuroHockey added the necessary amount of pressure to spur on the game.

She also takes us through her earlier career in sport. She explains her earlier childhood was spent doing cross country running and Gaelic Football before she first picked up a hockey stick in the beginning of secondary school. Just after school, she played in America for the University of Massachusetts and toured the country competing in hockey tournaments across America.
