A crowd of 19,285 set the new all-time women's hockey attendance record at Scotiabank Arena on Friday night as home team Toronto beat Montreal 3-0 in a Professional Women's Hockey League game.

The previous record of 18,013 had been set at the 2013 world championships in Ottawa at a game between Canada and Finland.

Toronto's Kristen Campbell made 30 saves as  teammates Jesse Compher, Hannah Miller and Victoria Bach each scored in the third period to continue Toronto's winning streak.

"To see the amount of signs in the stands, to see little girls, little boys, families coming up, it's unbelievable," said Montreal's Marie-Philip Poulin. "What's happening in women's hockey right now, it's surreal and we all take it in with a big smile."

The PWHL is in its first season following the collapse of the Canadian Women's Hockey League and a player boycott of the US-based National Women's Hockey League, which paid as little as $2,000 (€1856) per season. PWHL salaries range between $35,000 and $80,000.
