All Mayo LGFA activity, "including training and inter-county trials," is set to be suspended next week unless the County Board can fill several vital positions at an EGM Tuesday night, according to a statement released Jan. 5.
Among the positions to be filled are Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer, and Public Relations Officer.
Mayo LGFA Chairman Des Phillips called the vacancies "a real and immediate threat."
"We've reached a critical juncture where the absence of key roles jeopardises the very existence of women's football activities in Mayo. We are facing the prospect of having to turn to Croke Park and Connacht GAA to take over. We urge our community to rally behind us."
According to the statement,"the impact of the pandemic has exacerbated volunteer shortages across all levels of the game," with "a bottleneck effect" where clubs don't have enough personnel to fill their own positions, and so don't nominate volunteers for any higher level.
2023 was a chaotic year for Mayo LGFA after a turbulent process hiring Liam McHale as new senior manager. McHale quit the management team of the men's side after one season before applying to the senior role with the women's team.
He was the preferred candidate of the independent appointment committee but was initially rejected by secret ballot when the board voted. He was then invited to re-apply and was ratified for at least three years.
Mayo are scheduled to play Meath in their opening game of the Lidl Ladies NFL Division 1 season on Sun., Jan 21.
