30-years ago the Ladies Football Association in New York was born from humble beginnings, more than a hundred years after their male counterparts. From the basement of a steakhouse in Riverdale to All-Ireland finals in Croke Park, Ladies Football in New York has grown from strength to strength with football fully immersed in the New York community.

In 1992 a group of Irish women and men in New York famously exclaimed “They have it in Boston, they have it in Philly, why can’t we have it here?” Later that year, the first-ever Ladies Gaelic Football Championship took place in the city with the Championship Final historically played in Van Cortlandt Park. Since then, they’ve grown the game, gone on to play in All-Ireland finals, while facing a number of hurdles along the way!

New York Ladies Football are celebrating their 30th anniversary this year, with efforts and focus on developing the game, support and promotion in New York, support of teams that travel to Ireland, as well as facilities and games development. See their “Empowering Women NY” campaign website to find out more about their strategic goals and fundraising efforts.

Her Sport Founder, Niamh Tallon said: “We’re really looking forward to sharing the story of New York Ladies Football and I was honoured to speak to so many of the people responsible for the success and growth of ladies football in New York. Gaelic games has fostered an incredible community in New York, ingraining Irish culture in everyday life in New York. In Ireland we take for granted the accessibility of gaelic games and the commitment and determination to build the game, the clubs and everything that goes with it,  really stood out to me.”

Gym+Coffee ambassador, Eimear Considine said: “I spent two summers in New York playing in the New York Championships. I made great friends and got to enjoy high quality football and coach in the summer sunshine. I have great memories of days spent in Gaelic Park, both playing and working in the Cúl Camps. The GAA community is so vibrant and special over there.”

Ronan O Coisdealbha, Head of Sport TG4 said: “We’ve had a busy summer of Ladies Gaelic Football on TG4, with much excitement about the games. We’re very happy to be airing this documentary with Her Sport about the history and journey of New York Ladies Football.”
