Katie Taylor has agreed to put her undisputed world lightweight belts up for grabs for the sixth time this year when she faces seven-weight world champion Amanda Serrano in Madison Square Garden.

The contest, dubbed the ‘biggest fight in the history of women’s boxing’ by many has been highly anticipated and will make history on Saturday April 30th as the first female meet to headline a card at the New York venue.

The Bray native originally unified her WBC, WBA, IBO and IBF belts when she overcame Delfine Persoon in 2019, while her Puerto Rican opponent earned her stripes with a 42-1-1 record, including 30 knock outs.

Talking on the “mega fight” the 2012 Olympic champion described the event as “an incredible opportunity” for both parties.

“I’m very proud. I’ve been five short years being involved in professional boxing and I’m coming to the stage where I’m in the biggest fight in female history” she told Matchroom Boxing.

“This genuinely is a 50/50 fight. I never step into a ring thinking about the A side or the B side but I do step in every time thinking I’m going to win and that I’ve prepared to win,” she added.

Reported to take home over $2 million dollars in comparison to Serrano’s  $1 million, KT notoriously has an impeccable winning streak in which she has never lost professionally.

Putting everything on the line on this occasion once again, she anticipates the bout to be “a legacy kind of fight, a career defining fight.”

“Some of the household names you’re actually seeing now are female fighters and I like to think that I had a big part to play in that. I’m very proud to be the undisputed champion as well, it’ s the pinnacle of professional boxing.”

Promotor Eddie Hearn echoed that sentiment, citing that "Taylor vs. Serrano is a fight for the history books.”

"From the moment Katie Taylor stepped into my office, this is the moment we always dreamed of” he said.

"The moment the world would stop and watch and watch the two greatest female fighters on the planet headline at the Mecca of boxing, Madison Square Garden.

“It’s the by far the biggest female fight of all time but it’s also one of the biggest fights of all time, the undisputed World and Olympic champion against the seven division World champion.

Brooklyn residing Serrano also sees the confirmation as “a dream come true”, attributing a “one of the greatest boxers of all time” title to Taylor.

“Since I was a young girl, my only boyfriend has been boxing. I have dedicated my life to him, and this event makes that commitment worth every minute” she commented.

“On April 30th I am going to make history for me, for my team, for my family, for Puerto Rico, for every Latina and Latino and for all women worldwide.”
