Ireland’s top athletic talents were on display over the weekend competing across Ireland, England and Belgium. Here’s a round up of this weekends action!
Irish Life Health – AAI Games and Combined Events
The Irish Life Health AAI Games took place on Sunday, 27th May in Morton Stadium, Santry. Phil Healy competed in both the 100m and 200m, with strong performances in both events. Phil Healy and sister, Joan Healy, claimed first and second place respectively - a talented family. Phil won the 100m with a wind-assisted time of 11.36s and Joan finished second with a time of 11.72s. Phil also ran an eye-catching 200m in 23.09s to seal first place. 17 time Irish National title holder, Kelly Proper, staged a stunning fight back to claim second place with a time of 24.43s. Proper still holds the second fastest Irish 200m with a time of 23.165s.
The U20 Women's 400m saw Davicia Patterson (Beechmount Harriers) record a World Junior A qualifying time in the 400m with a time of 53.64s and Ciara Deely (Kilkenny City Harriers) seal second place in 54.68s, her second B standard qualifying time. The two girls will have the IAAF World U20 Championships to look forward to in Tampere, Finland in July.
Elizabeth Morland (Cushinstown) won the 100m hurdles in 13.58s edging Sarah Lavin (UCD) who ran a time of 13.63s. Amy McTeggard (Boyne A.C) won the Senior Women Multi Events with Laura Frey (Lagan Valley A.C) and Karen Dunne (Bohermeen A.C) finishing second and third respectively.
IFAM International Flanders Meet
A large number of Irish athletes travelled to Belgium to take part in one of the largest graded track meets in Europe.
Ireland’s Olympic steeplechaser, Kerry O’Flaherty (Newcastle AC) cemented her place in August’s European Championships finishing third with a time of 9.53m in the women’s steeplechase.
Sarah Healy (Blackrock AC) ran a new PB and set a new Irish U18 youth record in the 1500m, running a time of 4:13.32 and at the same time recording a World Junior A qualifying time. Healy’s time beats Ciara Mageean’s previous record of 4:15.46.
Another great result for the Irish saw the junior 4 x 100m relay team set a new U20 National Junior Record. The team of Molly Scott, Gina Akpe-Moses, Rhasidat Adeleke and Ciara Neville ran a time of 44.15s which puts them third on the Irish Senior all time list.
Individually, Ciara Neville and Gina Akpe-Moses both recorded 100m World Junior A standard times for the World Junior Championships setting times 11.63s and 11.68s. Rhasidat Adeleke’s set a time of 23.94s in the 200m, B standard qualifying for the World Juniors.
British Milers’ Club Watford GP
Olympian Ciara Mageean won a highly competitive 1500m ‘A’ race at Saturday's British Milers Club meeting in Watford. Mageean recorded the winning time of 4:09.10 and Kelly Neely recorded 4:25.08 in the same race.
