All Star Nominations: Who’s In The Running For Camogie Player Of The Year?

The 2023 PWC All Star nominations have been released, providing a glimpse into who might be in with a shout for the camogie player of the year and for a spot in the team of the season.

As O’Duffy Cup champions, Cork pick up 11 selections for the Camogie All Stars team, followed by Waterford’s nine, Galway’s seven, Tipperary’s six and Kilkenny’s three nominations.

Amy Lee, Amy O’Connor, Fiona Keating, Hannah Looney, Katrina Mackey, Laura Hayes, Laura Treacy, Libby Coppinger, Meabh Cahalane, Meabh Murphy and Saoirse McCarthy all starred throughout the championship for The Rebels and have earned this recognition as a result, as have Annie Fitzgerald, Beth Carton, Brianna O’Regan, Keeley Corbett Barry, Lorraine Bray, Mairead O’Brien, Niamh Rockett, Orla Hickey and Vikki Falconer for fellow finalists Waterford.

Galway’s standouts were Aoife Donohue, Carrie Dolan, Fiona Ryan, Niamh Hanniffy, Roisin Black, Shauna Healy and Siobhán McGrath, while Aoife McGrath,Cait Devane, Julieanne Bourke, Karen Kennedy, Roisin Howard and Teresa Ryan all rose to the fore for Tipperary.

Last year’s All Ireland champions Kilkenny then complete the set, with Claire Phelan, Denise Gaule and Grace Walsh all in with a chance.

The official winners in that category, as well as the overall Player of The Year, Soaring Star and Manager of the Year will be awarded their accolade on November 4th in Croke Park.

Who’s Up For Camogie Player Of The Year?

Voted for by the intercounty players, there’s stiff competition then for the overall Camogie Player Of The Year, with Cork captain Amy O’Connor leading the charge in the senior category, alongside teammate Saoirse McCarthy and Waterford’s Beth Carton.

On the intermediate scene the victorious Derry have two nominations via Aine McAllister and Aoife Ni Chaiside, with Meath’s Aoife Minogue also represented, while for the junior edition Clare’s Ellen Casey and Caoimhe Cahill were honoured, and Tipperary’s Jean Kelly completes the set.

Speaking on the announcement of all of the nominees Camogie Association President Hilda Breslin reflected on the “extraordinary year”, one that showcased “exceptional talent and unwavering determination from all the players.”

“I extend my heartfelt congratulations to those who have been chosen as nominees for the prestigious PwC Camogie All-Stars. Each of them has contributed immensely to the breath-taking display of our beloved game, making it an unforgettable journey from start to finish” she said.

“Every single nominee is truly deserving of their recognition, and I eagerly anticipate celebrating their achievements at the Awards evening in the iconic Croke Park.”

“Furthermore, I would like to extend my congratulations to the numerous well-deserving nominees of the PwC GPA Camogie Player of the Year Awards across the Senior, Intermediate, and Premier Junior championships. These awards will be decided by their fellow players and highlight the profound respect each recipient holds among their peers, as well as their exceptional personal performance and dedication to the sport.”

GPA CEO Tom Parsons also had his say, extending his congratulations to all of the nominees and thanking them for “ their commitment and for the entertainment that they provided for us all.”

To be recognised for your individual excellence within a team environment is special. And to those players in the running to become the PwC GPA Camogie Players of the Year, the very best of luck. They have demonstrated the highest levels of skill, dedication, and teamwork in 2023 and every one of you should be very proud of being selected” he said.
