Niamh Fogarty (Raheny Shamrock AC) has made Irish athletics history by breaking the long-standing national record in the women’s discus throw.
Competing at the Oklahoma Throws Series in the USA, the 25-year-old Westmeath native launched a personal best of 58.40 metres in the second round - surpassing Patricia Walsh’s 1983 record of 57.60 metres, which had stood for 41 years, since the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics.
The event was won by Nigeria’s Obiageri Amaechi with a throw of 62.83m, but it was Fogarty’s performance that stole the headlines back home.
Having already represented Ireland at the European Throwing Cup in Cyprus earlier this season, Fogarty continues to build impressive momentum in what could be a breakthrough year for the discus star.
